Robert Mallet-Stevens believed that furniture of the future should satisfy the demands of contemporary living with simplicity as its main criterion. Generally, his chairs are made of tubular steel, perhaps with cubist inspired fabric, and are characterized by simple lines and subdued colors. Although made on commission, in his mind, they were created for mass production.
With this futuristic chair Stevens proposed his geometric model for furnishings, based on the triumph of the perfect machine. The lines carry the imagination to visualize the motion of trains, planes, cars and everything else that is useful. The main elements that create order and make us understand the piece are the well-polished surface, the right angles in counterpoint with curves. This stackable chair was designed for the kitchen of the Villa Cavrois at Croix that Stevens designed and which is still considered a masterpiece of modern architecture.
