René Herbst was known as “l’homme d’acier,” the man of steel, in the twenties, more for his nerves of steel rather than for the material that he began using for furniture construction in France.
He was trained mainly in London and then study trips took him to
Russia and Italy.
He participated in the “Salon d’Automne” for the first time in 1921.
His transition from the early, more classical phase to Art Déco can be seen in the bas-reliefs for the dining room he presented at the “Salon des Artistes Décorateurs” in 1924 and in the nickel-plated steel tube pieces he made the following year.
He was one of the main founders of the UAM, Union des Artistes Modernes, that was established in France in 1930.
He organized several exhibits for the UAM, including “Les Formes Utiles,” in the ‘forties.
His major projects include the furniture for Begum Aga Khan where he did not have to compromise on quality. |
