Charles Eames

Eames, one of the greatest twentieth century designers, thought of architecture in terms of structure.
He studied architecture but also worked in the field of furniture design and was active in motion pictures.
Attended the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan where he met Ray Kaiser whom he married in 1941.
That same year he moved to Santa Monica, California where he designed two revolutionary prefabricated houses, his own and that of the director, Billy Wilder.
In 1940 Charles and Ray moved to Los Angeles where he designed sets for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
Together they experimented techniques for molding plywood, these were the preliminaries to the enormous successes in furniture design that brought them awards for their curved plywood chairs.
There was also an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art where he showed an infinity of drawings and sketches and a series of prototypes to convey the level of comfort his pieces offered.
His wife, Ray, played an important part in his work which included documentaries on various topics ranging from animals to toys to baroque architecture.
