Year: 1929
Designer: Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
Materials: shiny, chrome-plated steel bar structure, transparent glass table-top.
This table, known as Barcelona erroneously leads to the assumption that it was designed as a companion piece to the eponymous chair in the German pavilion at the Barcelona world exposition. As in the chair, the X-shaped steel bar structure plays an important role, but on this table it is linear and straight beneath the top whereas in the table made to go with the Barcelona chair the top is supported by two vertical X’s. This piece, originally entitled “Dessau” was designed for the Tugendhat house in Brno, Czechoslovakia.
