Year: 1929
Designer: Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
Materials: shiny, chrome-plated steel bar structure; checkered leather upholstery over foam padding; leather straps.
The Deutscher Werkbund commissioned Mies van der Rohe to design the German pavilion at the 1929 World Exposition. Therefore, the chair is named “Barcelona” for that event and is typical of Mies’ design. A hand-welded X-shaped bar comprises the base, while the seat and back are made of nine steel bands. All the finishing requires hand-crafting, reflecting the designer’s concept of deliberately making furniture that could not be mass-produced.
