Year: 1900
Designer: Charles Rennie Mackintosh
Materials: black-lacquered ash, padded seat upholstered in leather or fabric.
In 1900 Mackintosh designed three variations of a chair with three different height backs but identical seats. They were ordered for the “White Dining Room” and the “Cloister Room” in Miss Catherine Cranston’s Ingram Street tearooms. With these high-backed chairs Mackintosh wanted to create an “intimate” area in the middle of one of the rooms.
